5 Steps to a more mindful fitness workout

1. Take it all in…

With more emphasis on working out and getting outdoors, take in your surroundings. Notice where you are, the fresh air, the sounds, things you may not have noticed before. Make a mental note of them, how you feel and move on.

2. Focus on your body…

Instead of relying on music to get through a workout, listen to your body instead. Take note of how you feel. Notice if you feel tired, focus on your breath to help you through and keeping correct form in the moves you’re performing. Think about the muscles you are working. Focus on what they are doing for the body, take deep breaths to help move through the exercise.

3. Set yourself a goal…

Before you begin your workout, take a moment to set your intention. Take a couple of deep breaths in through the nose, and out through the mouth and focus on the job in hand. Give yourself a target of what you want to achieve…its doesn’t have to be huge but something you can accomplish or make progress towards. Check in with yourself afterwards and make note of how it feels.

4. Be your own cheerleader…

Encourage yourself to achieve…just because you think it doesn’t make it necessarily true. The key here is recognising any self-defeating thoughts and counteract it with a positive one. So when you say to yourself you can’t carry on, remind yourself you can. You can do this, you can carry on and you will achieve what you set out to do.

5. Credit where credit is due…

Remember to give yourself a well-done. Congratulate yourself for getting up and moving. Reflect on the workout and remind yourself of what you have achieved. That feeling of accomplishment when you complete a workout early in your day…focus on keeping it going. Or enjoy the feeling of tiredness in your body when you’ve completed an evening workout and sink into bed.
